Hi, my name is Antonio Calvo, born and bred in Extremadura, passionate about nature and photography, who also loves to share their local knowledge in ornithology with people who share the same passion. I consider myself with very lucky to live in an environment where loving ornithology is very easy.
Currently I work on several natural environment and bird conservation projects for the Government of Extremadura and BirdLife: Monitoring and Recovery of Little Bustard, Rescuing Montagu’s Harriers nests, tracking the productivity of Great Bustards, the Atlas of breeding birds of Spain and Monitoring and Recovery of Lesser Kestrel.
I live in Campo Lugar, in the province of Caceres. A municipality located inside the Natura 2000 Network, with a main habitat of steppes and cereal crop, but the south is surrounded by wetlands that provide fields of rice, to the north of the exclusive dehesa habitat, to the east is a chain of reservoirs such as Sierra Brava, El Cubilar, Ruecas and Gargáligas. The new reservoir of Alcollarín, just 5 km north, is already becoming great for bird lovers, thanks to the many species that are settling there. The 10×10 km grid TJ6040 can be considered as one of the largest variety of species of Extremadura, and even of Spain as a whole, according to recent studies in both winter and spring.
In order to get the satisfaction that comes from sharing my knowledge of this unique natural setting, I decided to lend my services as a birding guide and to help with photography. I hope not to disappoint fans who decide to hire us. We have prepared two set birding tours (Spring and Winter) , but any season is good to visit our area, and you can devise a birding trip that suits you. Tell us what birds you want see and I’ll help you find them! A full day or half day trip can be had at any time of year. Please, phone, email or fill in the form ‘contact form’.
I must also stress that the fact that so many habitats and so many species are concentrated in such a small area car journeys are minimal and that therefore the carbon footprint we leave will be much reduced. We offer a great opportunity for those nature lovers and especially birders, who also want to reduce CO2 emissions while practicing our hobby os ‘sustainable birdwatching’. In addition, a part of our revenue is used to offset the CO2 footprint made by your holiday.
