Ilha do Cardoso Tour

Day 1: starts with an early boat trip from Cananéia to Maruja (Ilha do Cardoso). This is a beautiful route with stunning views, where we can see scarlet Ibis (Eudocimus ruber), guiana dolphins and eventually some kingfishers (Megaceryle torquata, Chlorocerlye americana, C. amazona).

At Maruja we will have breakfast at our hostel. Then we will make a 3.5 km hike by the beach where we can see four different species of terns (Sterna trudeaui, Sterna hirundinacea, Thalasseus maximus, Thalasseus acuflavidus [eurygnathus]). We will arrive to Nova Enseada community, where we will share with local families, see their handcrafts, and have a caiçara lunch. Here we will be able to observe some forest/agricultural species like plain parakeet (Brotogeris tirica), vermilion flycatcher (Pyrocephalus rubinus), swallow-tailed hummingbird (Eupetomena macroura) or red-rumped cacique (Cacicus haemorrhous), among many others. We will have a free afternoon for resting, taking walks through the forest and going to the beach. We will return to Maruja by boat with the beautiful colors of the sunset.

Day 2: early birding around Maruja and breakfast. Then we will make a birding boat trip across the channel between the island and the continent. We well have the chance to know the place where the island broke up at 2018 giving rise to a new channel and the displacement of local communities. We will also know the ghost town of Ararapira.

We will go back to Maruja and have lunch. By the afternoon, we will take the boat and return to Cananéia before sunset.
